014 - Reigniting an old flame that I didn't even know had burnt....

(It's not everyday one receives a package like this from Mayfield. In fact, the only time you ever tend to receive one is when they decide to let you have something from home. Now, I digress briefly to think about Sasaki, an old friend from my time in middle school. The two of us had been rather close, and I sometimes wondered why we hadn't taken it further ignoring her general opinion of love as being "a form of illness". I suppose you could consider me to be somewhat of a romantic at heart, but regardless of much of the cynicism I've gathered over the years, I always had at least some belief in the idea of love. It was nothing quite as cheesy as those cheap romance novels or shoujo manga, but something. A small thing. Of course, during my time in this life, I had never been quite so lucky to experience the joy of having a romantic relationship with a nice girl. Or so I had thought until I opened the new package that arrived. And suddenly the memories came back of the true relationship I had shared with Sasaki... That I was sharing with Sasaki. The relationship which had managed to continue even as we had gone to different high schools and I became involved with the SOS Brigade. How could I have forgotten something like this? This was a major part of my life! Regardless, I had to know whether or not my not-so-new girlfriend had discovered the truth or was still in the dark as I had been...)

[Phone: Filtered to Sasaki]

Hey, uh... Sasaki, can we talk? Preferably in person. I suppose you could say I've remembered something important?

[In a quiet mumble:]

I don't know if I agree with that, Kyon-kun. But, ah, it... Emerson said, with consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. Which I don't know if I believe either. But, ...

[She blinks, a rather frightened expression on her face, as he comes closer.]

A-ah, Kyon-kun, wait!

[identity profile] cramschoolgod.livejournal.com 2011-02-14 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[She's given up all pretense at not blushing furiously as she rather awkwardly takes a hair tie off her wrist and ties her hair up in a ponytail, carefully avoiding his gaze.]

[Sasaki determinedly looks straight ahead. Quietly:]

Suzumiya-san is in this place, too.

[identity profile] cramschoolgod.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ah... I'm fairly sure your other friends wouldn't... approve, either. I don't... well, I do and yet I don't, Kyon-kun, this contradiction is such an impossibility in my mind. I wonder if I'll have to revise my philosophy...

Kyon-kun, it's, ah, psychological studies say that the sense of touch is very important to people, you know?

[identity profile] cramschoolgod.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's true. It was reckless, though. The end of the world, potentially. Which you know might not be truly so terrible, for it would be replaced by another universe, but I have a suspicion that I would not have been in Suzumiya-san's new, better universe.

Ah-- Nothing. It's just an interesting result.

[But Sasaki is gradually coming to the conclusion that if she must be suffering from an illness, she should at least not suffer from the same stupid afflictions that so many shy types go through...]

[identity profile] cramschoolgod.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
[Sasaki calmly looks up at him.]

Thank you, Kyon-kun. And if Kyoko succeeds in her plan--ah, I forgot, you don't know about this yet. Forgive me, I'm distracted...

[She silently leans into his side.]

[identity profile] cramschoolgod.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, well, that's in the future. What is it that they say? Classified information?

[She allows a small smile to creep onto her face.]

In fact, since I have heard that those who have escaped before have invariably lost their memories, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to tell you...

[identity profile] cramschoolgod.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well, as a matter of fact, I might enjoy doing precisely that, Kyon-kun... but no, not in this case. Kyoko is a part of an organization similar to your friend Koizumi's. She is an esper, of sorts. In general, my acquaintances are strange--though they seem less strange after a few weeks here...

[identity profile] cramschoolgod.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
My other acquaintances are supposedly a time traveler and an alien construct. [She smiles.]

[identity profile] cramschoolgod.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. And they all seemed to believe that I had an important role to play. I have some speculation about it, in fact. Kyoko-san has said that she believes that I am the true, or appropriate, repository of Suzumiya-san's powers. That I would be less unstable, apparently. I'm not sure that such powers wouldn't drive anyone unstable, but it's her opinion.

After that is speculation, but it seems that the time traveler seems to think that somehow, I can be used to stimulate Suzumiya's powers to break the stranglehold of predestination on the future. I believe those were the words he used.

And this is the most speculative answer of all, but my last friend, Kuyoh-san, is the representative of an alien group that seems to believe that my abilities as they exist may be used as a possibility for 'devolving' towards a more ordered state--for reversing the process of entropy, I mean. Or reversing the arrow of time, perhaps? I'm unclear on the specifics.

[identity profile] cramschoolgod.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, well... if Kyon-kun wished it, I would consider undertaking it.

[identity profile] cramschoolgod.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, Kyon-kun.

[There's a brief pause, and then, almost absent-mindedly, she puts her hand in his, lacing their fingers together.]

Ah, but I forgot. The choice isn't solely mine. Kyoko said your cooperation would be needed as well.
