Name/Work Name: Kyon/Akihiko
Canon: Haruhi Suzumiya
Canon Point: Midway through The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya (β line)
AU/CRAU: No
Age: 16 or 17
History: Kyon was always just your average guy, living the average life... Until the day he started school at North High, where he met Haruhi Suzumiya. As long as you didn’t speak to her, Haruhi could almost pass as being another average teenage girl, of course when she did open her mouth, her displeasure with the mundane nature of the world was quite apparent as she constantly expressed a desire for interesting things to happen. Despite his reservations, Kyon somehow managed to get into the habit of casually talking to her before classes, it was one of these routine conversations that eventually lead to the idea. The SOS Brigade, short for “Spreading Excitement all Over the World with Haruhi Suzumiya Brigade” was formed with the express purpose of seeking out paranormal entities such as aliens, time travellers and espers.
In addition to himself and Haruhi, three other students were somehow roped into becoming members of Suzumiya’s Brigade. Yuki Nagato, resident bookworm. Mikuru Asahina, moeblob. Itsuki Koizumi, mysterious transfer student. It wasn’t long however until Kyon soon discovered that there were more to the other members than met the eye. Yuki Nagato is a humanoid interface sent by aliens to monitor the human race, Mikuru Asahina is a time traveller sent to the past in order to investigate the cause of a time quake and Itsuki Koizumi is an esper whose job is to prevent the world’s destruction. The purpose of their missions all linking back to Haruhi, who apparently has the power to warp reality using her subconscious. Of course, leaving him as the only normal human to be a member of this odd group.
For a little while, things managed to go relatively smoothly, until one day Haruhi had apparently had enough of the world and decided to make a new one. Fortunately, Kyon was able to end up resolving the situation through some... drastic measures which no one shall ever hear about ever. And Haruhi was left with the impression that the whole incident had merely been a dream.
Since then, the SOS Brigade has gone about their business trying to keep Haruhi entertained enough to prevent another such incident occurring, with events such as baseball tournaments and staged murder mysteries. However, a number of incidents have occurred anyway, among them having to travel three years into the past, a giant camel cricket kidnapping a student into an alternate space, the endless summer where time was stuck into a permanent two-week loop. After finally resolving the endless summer by doing his homework, things became relatively quiet for a while again until the time for the school culture festival came around when Haruhi decided that the SOS Brigade would make a film.
Naturally, this uprooted Kyon from his daily life once again as Haruhi began going out of control with various ridiculous script ideas and subtly warping reality to match them with her subconscious. After a ridiculous amount of effort and conflict, something somewhat resembling a half coherent film was put together, while making sure to have Haruhi give a very firm disclaimer that all powers and events in the film are entirely fictional to plant her mind firmly in the real world to prevent any more unnecessary distortion.
After the culture festival went by relatively uneventfully on Kyon’s end, the SOS Brigade were soon met with a challenge from the Computer Club, to do battle with them in a video game which they had programmed, with the condition that if the SOS Brigade lost, they would have to return the computer Haruhi stole from them some months ago. If the Brigade won, they would instead receive a brand new laptop for each member. When the competition arrived, the Computer Club attempted to cheat by giving themselves an unfair advantage. However, thanks to the super hacking skills of Nagato, the playing field was made even and the SOS Brigade won in the end.
Following this confrontation with the computer club, things went by quietly until the week before Christmas, where after waking up on December 18th, Kyon discovers that Haruhi is no longer a member of his class, Ryoko Asakura having taken her place in the seating arrangement. Given his past experience of Asakura involving her attempting to kill him, Kyon is quite noticeably disturbed by this and tries to seek out the other Brigade members only to find that the entire class that Koizumi was once a part of has disappeared and that Mikuru Asahina has never seen him before in her life. Visiting the clubroom as his final option, he finds Nagato there only to discover that she is also now an ordinary human. As Kyon decides to leave for the day, she provides him with a club application form.
With absolutely no leads on the situation, he returns to the Literature Clubroom the next day out of habit, where after browsing the bookshelves he discovers a clue, a note left by the Yuki Nagato that he knows, telling him that if he wants the world to return to the way it was that he must gather the “keys” within a two day limit.
However Kyon was unable to determine what these keys are or whether the time limit was effective from when he found it or the day before. Regardless, the day was fruitless in his attempts to learn anything. It wasn’t until speaking with Taniguchi the next day that he learned that Haruhi was now attending Koyouen Academy. With this newfound piece of information, he managed to track down both Haruhi and Koizumi at the other school, managing to convince Haruhi of the alternate universe by bringing up the time he met her three years ago while under the alias “John Smith”. Learning of the alternate world and the SOS Brigade she had created there, Haruhi was adamant about getting the old gang back together, going back to North High, kidnapping Asahina and heading to the clubroom with all five members reunited. As luck would have it, this would be the “key” necessary to activate the emergency escape program, which sent Kyon back to the Tanabata of three years ago again.
Once there, he reunited with Mikuru Asahina’s future variant and requested the help of the Nagato of that time once again, where he was given a gun with an antidote to reverse the effects of the time distortion upon return to the present by shooting the culprit, none other than the Yuki Nagato herself. With the help of Miss Asahina, he returned to December 18th of the current year to shoot Nagato when the time came, however before he had a chance, he was stabbed by Ryoko Asakura, who refused to let anything interfere with Nagato’s desires. As he slowly lost consciousness, he could see a second Mikuru Asahina come into view, along with a shadowy figure who apologised for not helping out sooner, but merely said that it hurt for him too.
And so he awoke in the hospital, no sign of a stab wound, with Koizumi there in his North High uniform again. He was back in the regular world again, apparently having been in a coma for the past few days after an accident on the stairs. After taking a little more time to fully recover, he was able to talk to Nagato about the incident that had occurred over the past few days. She told him that her punishment from her superiors would likely be severe, however Kyon rejected this saying that if the Data Entity ever did anything to her, he would cause such an uproar that it would be forced to send her back.
Personality: Kyon is ordinary. It’s one word that summarily sums him up. If you were to ask anyone he knows and they’ll probably say the same, just an ordinary guy like all the other ordinary people. And for the most part, he is. He goes to school, doesn’t stand out, and generally gets along well enough with most people even if they aren’t particularly close. He’ll bemoan the troubles of homework and enjoy keeping up with the new episodes of whatever that cool new show on TV is each week.
What is less ordinary though are his circumstances, as a child he wished desperately to be just like the heroes in that weekly Super Sentai program or Shonen Jump manga, or at the very least to be a side character who could partake in their adventures in the real world. Aliens, time travellers, espers and other supernatural phenomena were all things he wanted a chance to experience in real life. However growing up and maturing, he realised all these things are ridiculous and couldn’t possibly exist in real life. Of course, as soon as he’d settled for this fact and was content with ordinary life the universe pulled a fast one and proved him wrong once again.
With the supernatural suddenly becoming everyday for him, Kyon found it tough not only to accept these things, but to keep it to himself as well. Not only because people would think he was crazy, but because it would pose a threat to the world’s very existence. He’ll bemoan this fate to anyone who’ll listen (or at least, anyone he can bemoan it to as, well... secret.) and try to shirk his responsibilities when possible, but when it gets down to basics, the honest truth is that he wouldn’t trade it for anything and he would do anything, including putting his life on the line, to protect it.
He has a heavy sarcastic streak and isn’t afraid of showing it if he finds the suggestions made by others to be too stupid, usually punctuated with both sighs and facepalms. He doesn’t care much for taking center stage himself though and will usually go along with whatever the leader says anyway, even if it takes a little persuasion for him to give in. Whether this is because resisting is far too much effort or that somewhere deep down he actually enjoys being caught up in these ridiculous antics isn’t always entirely clear even to Kyon himself. If you asked him directly though, he’d say it was the first one though every time, never admitting to the second possibility.
Debt: Kyon’s wish was to restore the health of Yuki Nagato.
Suitability: Kyon really hates the idea of working for someone (Haruhi was bad enough), however is willing to put up with it to take care of what’s necessary.

All items, clothing included, are confiscated following the finalization of the contract and replaced with a standard-issue work uniform. Abilities, Strengths, and Weaknesses: Pretty much just a normal human. Capable of dealing with some pretty weird shit though.

As long as Nagato and the rest of the SOS Brigade are fine, I don't care what happens to myself.
This was the thought that ran through Kyon's head as he made his deal with the witch. Who would've thought that it was less than a year ago that he was bemoaning his association with these nutjobs?
"Sekai wo Ooi ni Moriageru Tame no Suzumiya Haruhi no Dan", Haruhi Suzumiya's Brigade for Greatly Enlivening the World, or the SOS Brigade for short. Well, he certainly agreed that his world had been greatly enlivened since he met her. Aliens, time travellers and espers... And now a witch. It didn't really fit the general theme, but he was capable of just going along with it at this point.
A single wish, huh? Like something out of a manga. There were plenty of things Kyon may have thought he wanted at times, but those things aren't important. He thought he'd wanted a normal life at one point, but when that wish had been granted he rejected it in favour of the SOS Brigade. They were his world, his life, his friends. And like hell would he ever let anything happen to them. Exactly how many time had he been saved by Nagato now? Now it was his turn to save her.
After a moment's hesitation he signed the contract. Who needs his name anyway? Not like anyone actually uses it. And the nickname Kyon was stupid anyway. With the contract done, Kyon felt a swirling darkness as the world faded... But as long as the SOS Brigade is fine...
